Congratulations, mama! Get ready for belly pats, tons of unsolicited advice, heartburn, and a love like you’ve never known. Your pregnancy is such a fleeting time (even though it may not seem like it!), and it deserves to be documented beautifully with a professional maternity portrait session. I know getting in front of the camera may sound daunting right now, so I’ve written this guide to help you prepare!
When to book
First, let’s talk timing. I recommend booking both the maternity and newborn sessions in your second trimester. Maternity sessions are best held in weeks 28-34 of your pregnancy, to take advantage of when you’ll likely be feeling your best. AWP offers a $375 maternity mini just for newborn clients, or book a full session with wardrobe changes and more images included. It’s up to you!
What to wear
An empire waist maxi dress or skirt is the perfect choice for a maternity portrait. The length hides any swelling you may be experiencing in your legs, and it photographs beautifully. Stick to soft tones and avoid stripes or other high-contrast patterns, as they will distract the eye. Look for flowing fabrics, such as tulle, chiffon, and lace.
My favorite maternity boutiques are Pink Blush Maternity and Sew Trendy Accessories. Need help? The studio has a growing collection of maternity gowns, floral crowns, and accessories which you are welcome to borrow!
At the session
I recommend treating yourself to professional hair and make-up styling, enjoying a yoga class or a massage, anything you need to feel totally relaxed and beautiful. It’s normal to feel a little nervous! You may not see your glow, but trust me, the rest of us do. I will pose and guide you so that those incredible curves are highlighted beautifully – it’s all in the angles, baby!
Maternity portrait artwork
You may be wondering what to do with these images once we’ve created them. I love to imagine my clients showing the portraits to their baby one day, and that little one seeing just how loved she was before she was even born. The most popular option is to create an album after the newborn session, but wall art and framed prints are popular choices too.
I hope you’re feeling excited and confident for your maternity session! Head here to book in your due date now – limited spring and summer availability remaining.
